No. I think it was written in house.

David Shayne's fab book MADvertising has this down as 'House' - collaborative brainstorming by Feldstein, DeFuccio, Meglin, Putnam and possibly more...

We wait with bated breath to see whether Frank was involved...

I am thrilled by the attention given my one appearance on a MAD cover. The credit "House" has always meant that the writing was done in house, by one or more of the staff.
I can't recall if I was paid for use of my face, such as it is...or was.

So we can't add "MAD writer" to this individual's long list of accomplishments?

Apols, Frank - I'd missed your earlier "in House" reply.

Compliments of the Season (and to all Maddites)

As of this writing, "Ask Frank Jacobs" has just surpassed 100,000 page views--the most popular thread ever posted at MAD Mumblings.com

Would a 1.00 per page view "toll", payable to The MAD Store.Com, on the next 100,000 hits be too much to ask? Just wondering.

Don't know if Frank Jacobs is still online, but if he is I have a question for him. Did you write the epic "Cool Casey at the Bat"?

I'm about to give a reading at the First Annual West Philly Gong Show at Curio Theatre, and have been searching high and low for the author of this magnificent piece. I know it was illustrated by Don Martin, but there seems to be no attribution. As far as I can tell, although there are a million Youtube versions of "Casey", nobody has recorded the beatnik version.

Frank writes:

My first "Casey" parody was "Casey at the Dice." Then through the years came at least five more, all by me. But the first MAD parody was "Cool Casey..." not by me. The writer was Paul Laikin. --Frank

Ah - the underrated Paul Laikin, who seemed to appear more in the masthead than on individual articles.

I'm thinking Paul was behind this with Mort D, although the first few on the Google search credit Drucker, rather than PL:

Hey thanks!

Yesterday at the library I dug out "The Annotated Casey at the Bat: A Collection of Ballads about the Mighty Casey", ed. by Martin Gardner (Dover, 1995, Third, Revised edition.) Gardner provides the text for "Cool Casey at the Bat" and attributes it simply to "the editors of Mad."

However, in Appendix II we find that "Mad magazine periodically prints parodies of Casey written by Frank Jacobs, a Manhattan writer who is Mad's most prolific contributor (more than 400 pieces, not to mention his eleven original Mad paperbacks.)"

They list:

"Casey at the Dice"
"Howard at the Mike"
"Casey at the Talks"
"Casey at the Hoop"
an Edgar Allen Poe version of Casey
the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere version of Casey

I highly recommend Gardner's third revised edition for all Casey (and Mad fans) -- in addition to the complete texts of 29 versions, it now includes three appendices detailing parodies and taking the story up through 1995.

Anyone who hasn't seen Frank Jacobs' "Poetry Round Robin" (from MAD #125, MAD Special #9, the CD-ROMs, and I don't know where else) is missing one of MAD's cleverest articles.

Recently had the distinct honor to meet Ignatz and Frank Jacobs. Took lots of pictures, shot some video, shared some laughs. Frank was part of Alan Bernstein's documentary effort which included interviews over Oct 16-17 of Larry Siegel, Tom Koch, Arnie Kogen and Jay Kogen. I plan to post more pictures and video between here and my site. If you'd like to learn more about what Alan's up to, here's a link: http://www.indiegogo.com/When-we-went-mad (C'mon, send the guy 10 bucks!)

Looks like you had a good time hangin' with Iggy and Frank.

Reminds me of a day in back in November, 2006 when I got lost in L.A., literally driving around in circles while trying to find Iggy's place so we could meet up with The Bard.

I've since acquired a GPS, so the next time we all get together will be a little bit less of a headache.

Scott,
You wouldn't have gotten lost if I hadn't told you to turn the wrong way.
I can't believe 4 years have passed since your visit.
Hopefully, our paths we'll cross again.

Doug,
Had a great time hanging out with you over the weekend. Let me know whenever your in town and we'll go get another pizza at Tony's

I'll get back down that way sometime in the near future. Hard to believe it's been 4 years, too. Seems like only yesterday that Frank was nearly mowed down by some young female driver as we were walking from my truck back to his place just after we grabbed a bite at a local eatery.

"DON'T YOU BE KILLING FRANK JACOBS!", I yelled at her as she drove off. "Who cares", muttered The Bard.

I swear I'm not making this up. Frank might remember it...maybe not.

By the way, here's a drawing of Frank by the great Kent Gamble. It was inspired by my visit with Frank and depicts his love-hate relationship with his trusty computer--the now infamous "1974 Univac" he spoke of while receiving his Finger Award.

The illustration was supposed to accompany an article for a Journal Of MADness issue that never saw the light of day, so I'm sharing it now:
