Hey experts. I have considered purchasing some of the various Mad pins for my collection. Recently a whole bunch have popped up on Ebay.
Are they authentic? Being replicated? Not that uncommon and should be purchased for a quarter?

Yes, they are authenic!....Kind of? Yes, they have been replicated enough now to saturate the market for collectors that may have went to great lengths to optain them originally in the 90's when they first were circulating. At one time (circa.Pre-E-bay) these pins were really hard to find though now thanks to E-bAY some of these pin manufacturers are milking the Mad name for profit. Both Sellers indicated in the auctions know each other and have played a part at one time in the developement of these once rare pinbacks as subscription premiums.
If you are a devoted collector of Mad memorabilia? then then these pinbacks are a must have for your collection.
Unfortunately the resale value of these pins have declined dramatically since they first appeared in Collectibly Mad in the early 90's way before E-Bay. (i.e.They should be purchased for whatever you (the collector) is willing to spend to have them just to complete the sets?)
Despite Seller Brionski's claims that only a limited number are avaliable is not exactly any reason to go busting your bank account to get these before they run out. The truth is like the set of 24 Collectible subscription buttons that e-bayers were paying over a hundred bucks for last year can easily be optained for $49 from one seller who had aquired several hundred of these from another auction several years ago.
Now for the hard core experts: There does exist at least two variations on some of the pins that have been reproduced from the originals. Regardless of these variations it is now very difficult to really tell an original from a copy at this point.
If you would like to add these pins to your collection then bid accordingly and you should get some decent reproductions at a reasonable price. The value of them must be adjusted from what was originally quoted In Grant Geissman's Collectiblibly Mad book as they have definately become much more avaliable thean they were at
the time of that particular writing. Will they go up in value in years to come? Who Knows? Maybe?? They make nice collectibles; however, dont's spend too much on them as they will be resurfacing on E-Bay as long as "Brionski' and "TymeSpan" have a surplus to unload to gullible collectors thinking they are getting a super rare deal?!

Mad Doctor,
I sure appreciate your response and am glad to see you still check out the Mumblings site. I feel like I have missed a "golden" era of the site now that many of the collectors and prolific posters seem to have gone away.....
Anyway, I did search back through your old posts and found one on the mad pins as well as the button set. Unfortunatly, I already bought the button set a couple years ago for $75. Booo.
As far as the pins, I ended up taking a seat from the sideline after Tymespan came in with all the auctions for the same pins.
Anyway, great to hear from you!

| RockyMtnMAD - I have a bunch of pins for sale. Let me know the ones you are looking for. I rather sell them on here than eBay. I will put a lot of them together for you. You will save on the eBay prices and on shipping. |
