I just read somewhere about the movie "Animal House," that Chevy Chase was interested in playing Otter, but the producers talked him out of it. This reminded me of Mad's satire of "Animal House," "Abominal House." In the scene in which the Delta brothers accept and reject pledges, Belushi goes nuts when he sees Chevy Chase's picture, saying "No, not him!" I have to wonder, did the writers know about Chevy Chase's near-casting, or was it some kind of Mad ESP? _________________ If we can't laugh, then our enemies win! |

Movie Trivia
Director John Landis has stated that his original choices for the roles of Boon and Otter were Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. Neither could be signed on for the movie because of scheduling conflicts.
Chevy Chase was originally asked to play the role of Eric Stratton. The role went to Tim Matheson instead, who later starred with Chevy Chase in _Fletch(1985)_ .
The role of D-Day was written for Dan Aykroyd.
John Belushi was flying between Eugene, Oregon and New York City twice a week in order to finish the movie, and rehearse/film for "Saturday Night Live" (1975).
Before Donald Sutherland was brought on board, John Belushi was the highest-paid actor in the cast at $40,000. _________________ Too many Freaks, not enough Circuses.

I love this movie! So hilarious-John Belushi was a comedic genius, even if he was filled with excess. I've seen his brother's show, he's not even remotely funny-maybe MAD can take According to Dim on....I read Dick DeBartolo did "Abominal House"-who was the artist? I could see Jack Davis doing this, but it was probably conventional Torres or Drucker fare, but I don't know, I haven't seen a lot of Davis' work. That and The Blues Brothers were his greatest, and Tim Matheson was probably at his peak too. _________________ Reading MAD since 1998... |

| "Abominable House" actually lists Arnie Kogen as the writer, with Dick DeBartolo credited for providing "additional dialogue" (something you don't often see in a MAD byline). Mort Drucker did the art. |
